31 May 2019

Commanding Officer Lieutenant Colonel Rupert Clements held a cocktail drinks reception at The Artillery Grounds in recognition of the training and achievements of Officer Cadet members of Bristol University Officer Training Corp. In attendance was Mr Stephen Parsons MBE DL as Deputy for H M Lord-Lieutenant,High Sheriff Mr Charlie Wylde, senior military staff from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and officials from the University. The event was a great opportunity to talk to local University Students and hear of their aspirations and ambitions. Many of the Bristol UOTC students will be taking, or have taken, the 3 day Army Officer Selection Board in Westbury, Wiltshire and all found their experience at the University extremely helpful preparation for this rigorous selection process. At the end of the evening the refurbished Mess was opened. Attendees listened to a moving First World War reflection on 2nd Lt Hardy Falconer Parsons VC of the Gloucestershire Regiment, a Medical Student of Bristol University, who died bravely on August 21st 1917 aged just 20 years old. He was under severe attack and was alone. Despite being mortally wounded, he defended his trench and held his position until a counter-attack could be launched.
