27 November 2018

‘Hear Our Stories’ was an event to engage business leaders and to encourage young people to raise their career aspirations through the use of minority ethnic role models in a powerful video followed by a panel discussion. The main aim of Babbasa is to empower young people who may feel distant from the workplace to identify and grasp opportunities. Employers from a range of sectors, business mentors and those featured in the film attended the event and shared their knowledge and advice. The film featured successful people from minority ethnic backgrounds including Deputy Vice Chancellor Nishan Canagarajah, handbag designer Keri Andriana (Amschela), Micheal Jenkins (film producer) and accountant Ololade Adesanya, The panel comprised Micheal Jenkins, Mohammed Siddique (Chief Executive, Geneco) and Lord-Lieutenant Peaches Golding OBE and was led by Sado Jirde (Director, Black SW Network). They shared their experience of positive action programmes, the impact of mentors on young people’s career paths and other tips on growing a career in a space where there are no role models that look like you do. Peaches Golding suggested that ’there is nothing wrong in failure. What is right is to learn from your experience, improve your capabilities and approach the situation with greater awareness and experience next time around.'
